Courses: Bachelor of Theology - BTh
Who is it for?
The Bachelor of Theology for Ministry degree (BTh) is the course chosen by many students who are funded by their sponsoring churches to study in the Federation for three years. Usually they are under 30. The BTh is a vocational degree that is taught in a more ministry-oriented way than the Tripos degree.
Independent students who are not seeking ordination may also take the BTh, but it should be noted that a mandatory part of the degree is the Pastoral Studies Portfolio (see below).
Who awards it?
The BTh is awarded by the University of Cambridge.
Entry requirements
There are no formal educational requirements for the BTh, but most students who undertake it are graduates. Non-graduate students need to show evidence that they can handle the demands of a degree course. It does not require previous theological study.
A Qualifying Examination is taken at the end of the first year. This is the basis for matriculation (becoming a university student) and entry to a University college (alongside membership of Ridley). First and Second Year Examinations are taken at the end of each of the following two years.
Length of study
The BTh is a three year course. Permission is sometimes given for students with a 2:1 degree or better to be exempt from the Qualifying Examination: they are therefore able to do the BTh in two years.
Who teaches it?
The BTh is taught within the Cambridge Theological Federation. Many subjects are team-taught by a group of teachers from across the Federation. BTh students attend lectures alongside ARU BA students, but have their own group and individual supervisions. It is assessed in a different way, by a combination of exams and essays. A small number of subjects are taught alongside Tripos students in the Divinity Faculty.
