Final year ordinand Ben Topham tells us about his Masters dissertation, which investigates social media through a theological lens.

facebook-tOver the last ten years, the way individuals and organisations have interacted with the internet has changed as social media has become part of Western life.  And the ways in which we as Christians and churches have responded have also varied.  

In my dissertation I look at the theological assumptions that often lie beneath these reactions – taking Facebook as my focus – and seek to analyse both the benefits and the potential dangers of using the community tool.

The practical objective of the thesis is to uncover the different uses that could be made of Facebook by churches and their leaders – personally, missionally and pastorally. From the research and theological reflection I will outline a guide which can help church leaders to use Facebook healthily and with theological integrity.
