Ridley Hall is one of my favorite places on earth…
Ridley Hall is one of my favorite places on earth, and I enjoyed sabbaticals at Ridley in 2000, and 2012, writes the Rev. Stockton Williams, Rector of St Peter’s Episcopal Church, Kerville, Texas.
I have wanted to share Ridley Hall with my parishioners at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Kerrville, Texas, and the chance to do so came this June. In the summer of 2013, we hosted an intern from Ridley, Adrian Morgan. His ordination was to be at Brecon Cathedral on June 27, 2015, and that seemed the perfect time for a parish trip.
So 14 of us arrived at Ridley on Saturday, June 20, and spent 4 days and nights in that special place. Karen Bevan and her crew were great hosts. The next day, Sunday, we spent in Ely, starting at the Cathedral. It happened to be the great annual festival of St. Etheldreda of Ely, and that made for a remarkable morning. After a wonderful, long lunch that Karen booked, we toured the Oliver Cromwell House. That evening, at Ridley, the Principal, Andrew Norman, and others hosted a gracious reception for us and some faculty in the Principal's Lodge.
Over the next couple of days, we heard 4 lectures from Ridley faculty members: Mike Thompson, Adrian Chatfield, Rob MacDonald, and Richard Higginson, speaking mostly on topics our group had chosen in advance. Karen booked us on the Christian Heritage Walking Tour, and we also saw the Fitzwilliam Museum.
We had free time, too, for exploring Cambridge, but a major highlight was the special tour of the rare documents in the Corpus Christi College Library, followed by tea with the College Master and his wife.
Ridley and Cambridge made a great impression on our folks, and they now love it like I do.
