Revd Peter Young 1926-2014

We were saddened to hear of the death on 28th June this year of Peter Young, who trained at Ridley from 1949 to 1951. After a curacy in Cheadle, Peter went to Malaysia in 1954, where he became a Malay citizen, and spent the rest of his life there serving the underprivileged.

Peter YoungPeter Young was a pioneer in the history of Malaysian social work, and was a much loved and admired figure. He was a founder, and from 1980 the first Executive Director, of ‘Malaysian CARE’, a Christian organisation aimed at showing God’s love by action in the community. His initiatives included setting up a home for children whose parents have leprosy, and providing work and homes for the mentally and physically disabled, prisoners and drug dependents.

We are grateful to Peter’s family for providing us with copies of appreciations of Peter’s life and service from the Malay media, by the Executive Editor of The Star and a local doctor.

Peter’s wife Betty died in 2009. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.
