Becca is passionate about youth ministry and ways of enabling the church to be more intergenerational in its culture, building on her doctoral research. Other areas of particular interest include practical theology, research methodology, and pedagogy.
Youth Ministry experience
Becca has worked for several churches across her career in youth ministry. She began working in youth ministry in Burlington Baptist Church, Ipswich, in an internship year in the church that she grew up in. She then moved to work for a church in Stoke-on-Trent as a Student Youth Worker, while she obtained a BA Hons degree in 'Youth and Community Work with Applied Theology' at Midlands CYM, St. John's Nottingham. She then spent four years as a youth minister in Chorleywood, Hertfordshire, before moving to Durham where she was a youth minister at St John’s, Neville’s Cross.
Becca has written prolifically within the field of youth ministry, writing articles, resources and her book, Be Live Pray, which is a resource for young people to develop prayer practices amidst every aspect of their lives. Becca also speaks regularly at events around the country (and sometimes oversees!) Becca is also part of the Executive Committee for the International Association for the Study of Youth Ministry (IASYM) and is a member of the Church of England’s 30K Project Board.
Research interests
Becca’s doctoral thesis, ‘Intergenerational Dialogue with Young People on Spirituality in Church: A Participatory Case Study' explored how churches might better listen to young people's voices and enable them to meaningfully participate in the running of church. She found that there were particular cultural and structural obstacles for churches to navigate, but that when intergenerational dialogue did happen, churches were better to realise their potential for intergenerational discipleship and regeneration.
Other interests
Outside of work, Becca especially enjoys reading, cooking, comedy, travelling and catching up with friends in beautiful coffee shops.
During her time as a Youth Minister in Chorleywood, Becca wrote a book about prayer for teenagers entitled Be Live Pray, published by Scripture Union, and began building a profile as a writer, speaker and youth ministry trainer in the wider field of youth ministry.
Becca writes a monthly column in Youth and Children's Work Magazine and has contributed to other books and publications in the field.
