Revd Dr Matthias Grebe

Ridley Associate

About

Revd Dr Matthias Grebe is the National Adviser for Ecumenical Relations for the Church of England, based at Lambeth Palace. In this role, he is responsible for developing and sustaining the Church of England’s ecumenical relationships, both at home and abroad, and supports the Archbishops of Canterbury and York in their ecumenical engagements. He is also the Associate Vicar of St Edward’s. Prior to this, he was Lecturer in Dogmatic Theology at St Mellitus College, London, and the Centre Lead of the Chelmsford Centre.

Matthias studied Theology, Philosophy, and Rhetoric at the University of Tübingen, where he later trained for a professional certificate in psychotherapy (in Viktor Frankl’s school of logotherapy). In Cambridge, Matthias trained for ordination in the Church of England at Ridley Hall (2009–2011) and undertook doctoral research on Karl Barth under the supervision of Professor David Ford at the Faculty of Divinity. His revised PhD thesis was published under the title Election, Atonement, and the Holy Spirit (2014). He is married to Victoria, and they have three young children.

Matthias held a Senior Research Fellowship at the University of Bonn, Germany, where he worked on a project focusing on theodicy, the suffering God, and Dietrich Bonhoeffer (see The Suffering God: Bonhoeffer and Chalcedonian Christology, in Bonhoeffer and Christology: Revisiting Chalcedon, T&T Clark, 2023). He is one of the editors of the T&T Clark Handbook on Suffering and the Problem of Evil (2023). His current research explores intra-Trinitarian relations of origin, particularly the generation of the Son and the procession of the Holy Spirit (see The Procession of the Holy Spirit: Revisiting the Filioque through Intra-Trinitarian Relations of Origin and Economic Missions, in Engaging Nicene Trinitarianism, T&T Clark, 2025 – forthcoming).
