We are saddened to share the news of the passing of Revd Dr Malory Makower, who died peacefully on 2nd October 2025 at the age of 87, in Lowestoft, where he lived with his wife, Jackie.
Dr Makower trained for ordained ministry at Ridley Hall in the 1960s, following academic studies at Trinity College Dublin and St John’s College, Oxford, where he later earned a DPhil in Theology. He returned to Ridley Hall as a tutor during the early years of his ministry, residing with his young family in Dashwood House. He also served for a time as interim principal.
His daughter recalls vivid childhood memories of Ridley, the green copper roof of Dashwood House and lunches with her father at Ridley after nursery. The family’s deep ties to the college include the baptism of one of his children in Ridley Hall Chapel.
Following his time at Ridley, Dr Makower became priest-in-charge in Lode and trained ordinands from the vicarage and later in Madingley. He subsequently served in Great Yarmouth as part of a team ministry and later moved to Norwich, where he established the East Anglian Ministerial Training Course to equip lay people for local church ministry.
Even after early retirement, Dr Makower remained active in ministry for many years, faithfully serving congregations until old age required him to stop.
We give thanks for his life, ministry, and the legacy he leaves in the many he taught, mentored, and served. May he rest in peace
